Brief History of the Chinese Language

The Chinese language (中国语文, Zhōnggúo yǔwén), or Sinitic language, is a language family that forms one of the branches of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages. Although it consists of many varieties, which can be considered separate languages (语, yǔ) or dialects (话, huà), it is often collectively referred to as “Chinese” (中文, zhōngwén). Mandarin is by far the most widely spoken form of Chinese, with 850 million speakers, followed by Wu (90 million speakers), Cantonese (70 million speakers) and Min (50 million speakers).

Today, there are approximately 1.3 billion people who speak some variety of Chinese as their native language, primarily in China, Singapore and Taiwan.
